How your answers are used

Attribution

Your answers are recorded as your opinion, attributed to you, and shared with the employer. The report shows "The referee reports…" to make it clear that these are your observations, not facts.

Verification

We run checks on the information you provide alongside the candidate's claims:

• Referee email — Whether the address belongs to the employer's own domain, or is a free webmail account.
• Employer record — Whether there is a registered company at Companies House matching the employer named, and whether it is active.
• Employment dates — Whether the dates the referee gave agree with the dates the candidate stated, within 45 days.
• Email authenticity — Whether the referee's domain publishes the sender checks that stop mail being sent in its name.

Privacy

Your contact details are kept for 3 months from when the check closes, then deleted. If you decline, your details are kept for 30 days instead.
